SYLVESTER, Ga. (WALB) - A fire at a home on Cordele Road in Sylvester caused the owners, an elderly couple, to be briefly hospitalized, the Sylvester Fire Department (SFD) said.
The fire broke out on Monday, June 16, at about 10:45 a.m., according to the fire report.
The report said that the fire started in the kitchen after an installation crew member set a crisper drawer onto the stove. The owners were having a new refrigerator installed, according to SFD.
SFD said that the installation crew and the owners were outside when they noticed smoke coming from inside the house shortly after the plastic drawer was set on the stove unattended.
The report said that the owners did not immediately call SFD because they tried to put the fire out themselves using a fire blanket, but they were unsuccessful. By the time SFD got to the scene, they said heavy smoke and flames were visible from outside the house.
SFD reported that the fire was under control at 11:26 a.m. Firefighters then stayed at the scene to monitor the house until 1:25 p.m., according to the report.
SFD said that the fire began in the kitchen and quickly spread through the windows and into the carport area.
