Description
SOUTH GEORGIA (WALB) — A majority of forecast models continue to paint a light accumulation of sleet and snow across South Georgia Sunday morning, Jan. 18, 2026, prompting a FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the region.

An Arctic cold front moving through the Southeast will interact with lingering Gulf moisture, creating the potential for a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow early Sunday. Although models still vary on the exact timing and placement, many suggest a brief window of winter precipitation before temperatures climb above freezing later in the morning, limiting impacts on major roadways.

Because air temperatures are expected to remain above freezing during the event, any sleet or snow that does fall will likely accumulate mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces, with minimal impact on normal travel conditions. Sunshine should return by Sunday afternoon, helping to melt what little snow might stick early in the day.
National forecast discussions also indicate that this surge of Arctic air could bring widespread cold across the Deep South and Southeast, with light flurries possible well into coastal and inland areas. While accumulating snow remains unlikely to be significant, forecasters stress monitoring updates as model guidance continues to shift.
After the weekend system moves through, another round of bitterly cold temperatures is likely early next week, with additional freeze concerns for residents and livestock.
