THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) - A historic Thomasville landmark is on the list for a much needed makeover this year.

The city is planning to start phase one for its Municipal Auditorium Comprehensive Facility Plan this spring.

Right now, the city is applying for funding to help restore the auditorium.

The first part of this multi-phase project is totaling around $6.4 million, with much of that coming from SPLOST funds.

In it’s most recent city council meeting, the city applied for four grants totaling $1.3 million to help pay for the project.

Assistant City Manager Sheryl Sealy said some of the most important fixes would be water intrusion at the doors, along the walls and windows, as well as broken ceiling panels.

“We have to take care of the bones of the building first,” Sealy said. “When you don’t address things like the water intrusion then you can’t really move onto things like painting or plaster repair.”

Last year, Sealy said a group of community leaders and those who use the auditorium gathered to identify challenges, improvements that could be made and what would make this a better location for future performances.

“Right now, the biggest thing that we heard from renters were more of the technical aspects involving the rigging, the state itself, load in, load out, just the challenges they encounter with that,” Sealy said.

Sealy said the city also engaged with a consultant for a market study which focused on the auditorium and improvements needed, but also what ground level spaces of the building could become.

Many people in the community use the facility and are ready to begin the process of revamping it.
