ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Police are warning last-minute holiday shoppers about Facebook Marketplace safety after arresting a buyer who allegedly tried to steal an iPhone at a southwest Atlanta gas station.
Police released video showing the arrest on Pryor Road earlier this week. Officers said two people met up to exchange an iPhone 14 Pro Max and the buyer reportedly snatched the phone and tried to drive off.
Police said the seller tried to grab onto the F-150 and fell to the ground. The rear tire struck the victim’s face, leaving visible marks.
The driver then crashed into a nearby gas pump and was detained by a witness, investigators said.
Officers arrived and arrested the suspect, later identified as Jacon Beasley, 18. He is being charged with aggravated assault, theft by taking and criminal damage to property.
Atlanta police are urging safety online and when meeting up with strangers:
- Take advantage of “safe exchange zones” outside most police stations
- Always meet in a public, well-lit area
- Bring a friend or share your location with someone
- Walk away if something feels off
