WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump on Sunday signaled that he was ready to move forward with a second phase of sanctions against Russia after the largest attack on Ukraine since 2022 struck a Kyiv government building, and more than 800 drones were deployed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the attack in a post on X, saying that four people had been killed and dozens were injured.
"It is obvious that Russia is trying to inflict pain on Ukraine and strike more brazenly. This is a clear sign that Putin is testing the world," Zelenskyy said in a video. "Whether they will accept it or put up with it. Therefore, it is important that the statements of state and institutional leaders are followed up with strong actions, sanctions against Russia."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack in a statement. “These cowardly strikes show that Putin believes he can act with impunity. He is not serious about peace. Now, more than ever, we must stand firm in our support for Ukraine and its sovereignty,” Starmer said in a statement.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who attended a meeting for the Coalition of the Willing last week to ensure security guarantees for Ukraine, said his country "stands with Ukraine and Putin's unrelenting aggression will never weaken our resolve."
When a reporter asked Trump on Sunday about setting up new sanctions, he responded with a yes.
The president insisted on Wednesday that he was taking action against Russian President Vladimir Putin when he imposed tariffs on India over its purchase of Russian oil.
The move comes as ceasefire talks to end the three-year war appear to have stalled between Putin, Trump and Zelenskyy.
After hosting European leaders at the White House last month, Trump said he's unsure whether Putin and Zelenskyy will participate in a bilateral meeting.
Trump said if there isn't a bilateral meeting, “there could be very big consequences, but we’ll see what happens. There might be very big consequences because this is something that has to end.”
