WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WCYB) — Neighbors in Washington County, Tennessee are depending on each other after Helene swept through the area.

WCYB spoke with the South Central community of Washington County, Tennessee on Monday to see how they have responded after the devastating storm that's left them without the essentials.

The South Central community is largely cut off from the outside with most services being suspended, most of the roads are impassable, farm lands are covered in mud and homes are destroyed.

We're safe and we do have our house but we haven't had power and water for four days," a Washington County resident to WCYB.

Neighbors have responded to support those in need.

We're providing meals three times a day, 8 a.m., noon, 5 p.m. provided by our Mennonite community, and local sourced foods. We're providing shelter, showers, places to sleep. We've turned the local school into a mini Walmart," said J.W. McKinney, the principal at South Central Elementary.

Mennonite members are using a local kitchen to cook food for those in the community. WCYB reported that about 1,000 people are utilizing the services at the school.

We have a love for God and the community, that's why we're doing it, said Wilmer Stoltzfus who is organizing the meals.

Residents are grateful during the time of need.

It means everything. We have eaten here for third day and gotten hot food and we've gotten water every time we come. The community has pulled together, and it's been wonderful, said a woman in line for food.

Washington County, Tennessee hopes to restore electricity to the school by the end of the week.

Organizers toldWCYB they will be continuing their work for the next several weeks.
