GREEN LAKE, Wisc. (WLUK) — Emily Borgwardt filed for “annulment/legal separation” Thursday from Ryan Borgwardt – her husband suspected of faking his own death and fleeing to Europe.
Court records reviewed by WLUK list Emily Borgwardt’s address as Lebanon, with his address in Watertown. An April 28 hearing was scheduled.
The filing comes one day after Ryan Borgwardt was charged with obstruction for the Aug. 11 faking of his own death on Green Lake.
He fled to the country of Georgia, but according to Sheriff Mark Podoll, returned to the United States on his own accord.
According to the criminal complaint, Borgwardt confirmed to law enforcement he intentionally placed physical evidence in an attempt to fake his death. He told investigators he had been looking at weather reports, planning when he was going to stage his disappearance.
Borgwardt appeared in court Wednesday, where a judge entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf and released him from jail on a $500 signature bond. He returns to court on Jan. 13.
Green Lake County is seeking restitution of $35,000 to $40,000.
